Disease relevance of GAMMA-CAROTENE

The gliding bacterium Herpetosiphon giganteus Hp a2 was shown to contain gamma-carotene, one monoglucosyloxy and two new diglucosyloxy carotenoids with a x-O-acyldiglucosyloxy carotenoid as main component [1].
Rhodococcus erythropolis naturally synthesizes monocyclic carotenoids: 4-keto-gamma-carotene and gamma-carotene [2].
Co-expression of these crtLm genes with the crtEIB genes from Pantoea stewartii (responsible for lycopene synthesis) resulted in the production of monocyclic gamma-carotene in Escherichia coli [3].

High impact information on GAMMA-CAROTENE

In the cells cultured under the anaerobic light conditions, in addition to these keto-carotenoids, we also found non-oxidized carotenoids (derivatives of gamma-carotene) [4].
Since gamma-carotene is not accepted as a substrate by Al-1, the formation of torulene must proceed exclusively by the cyclization of 3,4-didehydrolycopene [5].

Analytical, diagnostic and therapeutic context of GAMMA-CAROTENE

CrtYm, the CrtY homolog, metabolized lycopene to gamma-carotene, which was confirmed by deletion/expression analysis of the crtYm and by subsequent analysis of the metabolites from lycopene based on the retention times on high-performance liquid chromatography, UV-visible absorption spectra, and mass spectrometry [6].
