Disease relevance of Methisazone

  • Progressive vaccinia developed in a previously healthy woman following smallpox vaccination and was successfully treated with vaccinia immune human globulin and methisazone [1].
  • In these studies, isatin-beta-thiosemicarbazone (IBT) and marboran were administered once daily by intraperitoneal (ip) injection to mice using 30, 10 or 3 mg/kg for 5 days beginning 24, 48 or 72 h after inoculation with VV or cowpox virus (CV) [2].
  • The preparation Ukrain was studied in order to confirm its theoretically substantiated properties in comparison with amitozin as its structural and functional analogue, and two other functional analogues, namely methisazone (against herpesvirus and poxvirus) and remantadine (against grippevirus) [3].
  • Methisazone 40 mg/kg/day was administered orally to six pediatric and one adult patient who contracted vesicular complications affecting the skin or mucocutaneous junctions 3 to 9 days after antismallpox vaccination, and to one elderly man with myeloid leukemia who developed vaccinia necrosum [4].
  • Methisazone is an effective compound against variola and vaccinia viruses [5].
