Disease relevance of nifK

  • The Anabaena strain 7120 xisA gene is located at the nifK-proximal end of the nifD element and is required for excision of the element in heterocysts [1].
  • Surprisingly, Northern hybridization also revealed the presence of transcripts that corresponded to nifD, nifDK and nifK, which have not been previously reported as transcripts in contiguous nifHDK genes of cyanobacteria [2].
  • On the other hand, in the cultured isolate from Azolla and in Nostoc sp. 7801, the nifD and nifK genes are nominally separated by an interval of unknown length, compatible with the interruption of the nifHDK operon by a DNA element as observed in Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 [3].

High impact information on nifK

  • The nifK gene was not transcribed in DW12-2.2, indicating that its expression is dependent on the nifH promoter and excision of the 11-kb element from the operon [4].
  • Using the Southern blot technique and cloned Anabaena PCC 7120 nifK and glnA genes as probes, restriction fragment length polymorphisms of these cyanobacterial symbionts were compared [5].
