The identification of a gene (yiaE) encoding 2-ketoaldonate reductase (2KR) in our previous work led to the hypothesis that Escherichia coli has other ketogluconate reductases including 2, 5-diketo-D-gluconate reductase (25DKGR) and to study of the related ketogluconate metabolism [1].

The yiaE gene from Escherichia coli K12 was functionally expressed in E. coli BL21 using an IPTG inducible pET expression system (2.1 U/mg), and YiaE was purified to a specific activity of 18 U/mg [4].
