Cadmium accumulation in the mouse gut endoderm occurs until the closure of the vitelline duct (day 9 post-coitus; p.c.), producing anterior neural tube defects (NTD) [1].

High impact information on Vitelline Duct

This finding can be explained by the ability of cadmium to pass from the yolk-sac cavity into the primitive gut (where it is absorbed) before the closure of the vitelline duct but not later [2].
This accumulation occurred after the administration of the trypan blue up to the time of closure of the vitelline duct, which occurs at 11 days postconception in rats and 9.5 days in mice [3].
