Regulation of respiratory activity of brown adipose tissue mitochondria through changes in cytochromes.

Exposure of cold-acclimatized rats to heat (37 degrees C) for a short period decreased brown adipose tissue (BAT) mitochondrial substrate-dependent oxygen uptake and H2O2 generation. Both the concentration and substrate-dependent rate of cytochrome b reduction decreased as early as 3 h of heat exposure. These results identify cytochrome b as the locus of regulation of electron transport in BAT mitochondria under conditions of heat stress.[1]
