Disease relevance of Muricholic acid

The potential protective effects of beta muricholic acid (beta-MC), another 7-beta-hydroxylated bile salt, have not previously been studied in TLC cholestasis [1].
In the bile fistula rats, the main products were chenodeoxycholic acid, alpha-muricholic acid, and beta-muricholic acid [2].

TLC analysis of (14)C-labeled bile acids synthesized in cells overexpressing StAR showed a 5-fold increase in muricholic acid; in chloroform-extractable products, a dramatic increase was seen in bile acid biosynthesis intermediates (27- and 7,27-hydroxycholesterol) [3].
Dio significantly increased biliary cholesterol (Chol) output and prevented the decreases in bile flow, bile acid output, and biliary alpha-muricholic acid and the increases in biliary hyodeoxycholic acid, deoxycholic acid, and hydrophobicity index of bile [4].
In the two types of liver epithelial cell lines, dexamethasone and chenodeoxycholic acid supplementation exerted, individually, either a stimulating or an inhibiting effect on the bile acid secretion concurrently with the hydroxylation of chenodeoxycholic acid into alpha-muricholic acid [5].
