Disease relevance of NSC80860

An orotidine-phosphorolyzing enzyme and a purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNPase) of Erwinia carotovora AJ 2992, which is a potent producer of ribavirin (1-beta-D-ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxamide), an antiviral agent, from orotidine and 1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxamide (TCA), were purified 23-fold and 103-fold, respectively [1].

The use of ribavirin 5'-phosphate (RMP, 1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxamide riboside 5-monophosphate) as the phosphate donor obviates this difficulty since this triazole heterocycle does not significantly absorb at the wavelengths used to detect most nucleoside analogs [2].
