We found that the plasticizer tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBEP), present in plasma collected in Vacutainers, was a potent inhibitor of alprenolol and imipramine protein binding [2].
TBEP markedly increased erythrocyte amitriptyline in adult but not in cord blood [3].
Drugs (250 ng/ml) were also added to washed erythrocytes (RBCs) resuspended in autologous plasma or saline (hematocrit = 0.4) with or without AGP, albumin, or tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBEP), used to displace AGP-bound drugs [3].
Tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (I), a plasticizer commonly found in evacuated blood collection tubes, displaces many basic drugs from their binding sites on serum proteins and causes them to redistribute from serum into red blood cells (i.e., artificially lowering serum or plasma drug concentration) [4].
The effects of a widely used trialkyl phosphate (TP), tributoxyethyl phosphate (TBOP), on the peripheral nervous system of Sprague-dawley (SD) rats were investigated [5].
