Disease relevance of metC

In the enteric bacteria Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica, these reactions are catalyzed by irreversible cystathionine-gamma-synthase and cystathionine-beta-lyase enzymes [1].
The metC gene, which is known to code for a cystathione-beta-lyase, was cloned from the axilla isolate Corynebacterium striatum Ax20 and heterologously expressed in E. coli [2].

In Escherichia coli, three additional proteins having L-cysteine desulfhydrase activity were identified as O-acetylserine sulfhydrylase-A, O-acetylserine sulfhydrylase-B, and MalY protein, in addition to tryptophanase and cystathionine beta-lyase, which have been reported previously [3].
