Disease relevance of rpsA

Translation initiation region (TIR) of the rpsA mRNA encoding ribosomal protein S1 is one of the most efficient in Escherichia coli despite the absence of a canonical Shine-Dalgarno-element [1].
One of these phages, lambda aspC2, carries rpsA, the structural gene for the ribosomal protein S1 [2].

High impact information on rpsA

Mutants have been constructed by deleting regions of the gene rpsA for ribosomal protein S1, which had been cloned in plasmid pACYC184 [3].
Expression of the protein kinase in T7-infected Escherichia coli cells results in the phosphorylation of 30S ribosomal subunit protein S1, and initiation factors IF1, IF2, and IF3, as determined by high-resolution two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and specific immunoprecipitation analysis [4].
In cells carrying the rpsA gene on the high copy number plasmid pBR322 the rate of rpsA mRNA synthesis was increased 40-fold, whereas the rate of protein S1 synthesis was doubled, in comparison with these rates in an rpsA haploid [2].
The effects of guanosine tetraphosphate (ppGpp) on inhibition of single-round in vitro transcription and on the kinetics of open complex formation were investigated at the Escherichia coli ribosomal protein promoters rplJ and rpsA P1 [5].
