SLOW WALKER1, essential for gametogenesis in Arabidopsis, encodes a WD40 protein involved in 18S ribosomal RNA biogenesis [1].
However, the current leading hypothesis, based on phylogenetic trees for 18S ribosomal RNA and several proteins, joins nematodes with arthropods in a clade of molting animals, Ecdysozoa [2].
Recombination among these repetitive DNAs most likely produced unique arrangements of the rrn18 and rrn5 genes in the genus Cucumis [3].
Polymorphisms were identified by cosmids carrying rrn18, nad5-exon2, rpl5, and the previously described JLV5 deletion [4].
