Why mice have lost genes for COL21A1, STK17A, GPR145 and AHRI: evidence for gene deletion at evolutionary breakpoints in the rodent lineage [1].
Thus, DAP kinase DRP-1, ZIP kinase, and DRAK1/2 together form a novel subfamily of serine/threonine kinases [2].
The catalytic domain is also homologous to the recently identified ZIP kinase and to a lesser extent to the catalytic domains of DRAK1 and -2 [2].
To clarify the role of DRAK1 in osteoclasts, we examined the effect of three osteoclast survival factors (interleukin-1, macrophage colony-stimulating factor, and osteoclast differentiation-inducing factor) on rDRAK1 mRNA expression and the effect of rDRAK1 overexpression on osteoclast apoptosis [3].
An in vitro kinase assay revealed that both DRAKs are autophosphorylated and phosphorylate myosin light chain as an exogenous substrate, although the kinase activity of DRAK2 is significantly lower than that of DRAK1 [4].

Biological context of STK17A

The present study describes the cloning of two novel serine/threonine kinases termed DRAK1 and DRAK2, whose catalytic domains are related to that of death-associated protein kinase, a serine/threonine kinase involved in apoptosis [4].
