Disease relevance of hdeA

  • The hdeA gene of E. coli was found to be acid inducible and was revealed by genetic studies to be important for the acid survival of the strain [1].

High impact information on hdeA

  • As for the hdeA and purA promoters, which are repressed by MarA, the rob marbox is also in the "backward" orientation [2].
  • Database searches indicated that two TnlacZ mutants had an insertion within the hdeA gene, which is the first gene in the hdeAB operon [3].
  • The hdeA and hdeB mutants both display reduced viability upon acid stress, and only the HdeA/HdeB expression plasmid can restore their viability to close to the wild-type level, suggesting that both proteins are required for optimal protection of the bacterial periplasm against acid stress [4].
  • However, nine acid-inducible genes are clustered in the gadA region, including hdeA, which encodes a putative periplasmic chaperone, and four putative regulatory genes [5].
  • Using PCR-generated deletions, we were able to make in-frame deletion strains of both hdeA and yjbJ [6].

Biological context of hdeA

  • When a Kn(r) gene was inserted into hdeA at two different locations and orientations, both essential and nonessential phenotypes were seen [6].
