Most patients have a long history of a substernal goiter and appear initially with superior vena cava syndrome [1].
Transient superior vena cava syndrome due to propylthiouracil therapy in intrathoracic goiter [2].
Parathyroid devascularization is more common with resection of a substernal goiter and autotransplantation can prevent permanent hypoparathyroidism [3].
While the overall incidence in the United States has decreased with the routine use of iodized salt, the development of large multinodular substernal goiters in the rest of the world is still common [4].
A case is reported to Tc-99m pertechnetate accumulation within an anterior mediastinal thymoma during a search for substernal goiter [5].
