(R,S)- and (R)-3-Bromopropan-1,2-diol (alpha-bromohydrin) produced diuresis and glucosuria when administered to male rats but had no effect on the metabolic activity of rat kidney tubules in vitro [2].
Hydrolysis of the epoxides produces the male antifertility agents alpha-chlorohydrin (IX, X-Cl) and alpha-bromohydrin (IX, X-Br) which are oxidatively metabolized to oxalic acid (XII), thus causing renal damage [3].
