The melatonin receptor fragments amplified from rat brain, thymus, and spleen share identical nucleotide sequences with the rat Mel1a-melatonin receptor subtype [1].
Expression of the Mel1a-melatonin receptor mRNA in T and B subsets of lymphocytes from rat thymus and spleen [1].
Since several members of the PRL gene family are expressed during late pregnancy, we investigated the relationship between the expression of placental lactogen (PL)-II-one member of the PRL family- and melatonin, as well as the placental expression of one of the receptors for melatonin, melatonin receptor 1a (Mel(1a())) [2].
In neonatal rat gonadotropes, melatonin inhibits gonadotropin-releasing-hormone (GnRH)-stimulated increase in intracellular Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)](i)); in cells transfected with the Mel1a melatonin receptor, however, melatonin has been shown to potentiate agonist-stimulated [Ca(2+)](i) increase [3].
These data suggest that D2 and Mel1a may control the expression of PRL-GH genes in the rat placenta and its response to the extracellular changes of DA and melatonin secreted from the maternal organ [4].
