The endopeptidase resembled mammalian neprilysin (NEP, endopeptidase 24.11) in that the enzyme activity was inhibited by phosphoramidon and thiorphan and that it cleaved AF1 on the amino side of phenylalanine [1].
Two other neprilysin inhibitors (SCH 32615 and SCH 39370) and the bivalent metal ion chelators, EDTA (1 mM) and 1, 10 bis-phenanthroline (1 mM) failed to inhibit the nematode enzyme [2].
A family of neprilysin-like genes are present in the genomes of both Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans; in C. elegans it seems that individual family members have evolved to take on different physiological functions, because they are expressed in a tissue-specific manner [3].
