Disease relevance of UL9

  • Within the UL2, a sequence that fits the consensus sequence of the NF1 binding site, as well as one that has partial homology to the binding site of UL9 of herpes simplex virus, is present [1].
  • We have deleted specifically each of these three 11 bp sequences from within functional copies of HSV-1 oriS and have examined the effects on origin activity and binding of the UL9 protein [2].

High impact information on UL9

  • The NF1 and UL9 binding site homologies were found to be nonessential to origin function [1].
  • Two sites within the short region origin of DNA replication (oriS) in herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) which bind the product of the UL9 gene have previously been identified [2].
  • Studies in HSV-1 DNA replication implicate the UL9 protein as a key initiator of replication [3].
  • A putative MDV UL9 gene was subsequently identified through sequencing of MDV genome fragments (BamHI G and C) [3].
