Disease relevance of hydrogen chloride

In a subsequent study of the respiratory response of the baboon to HCl, 15-min exposures to 5000 and 10,000 ppm (nominal concentrations) produced severe hypoxemia with a concentration-related increase in respiratory rate and minute volume [1].

Rainwater samples were collected and measured for the radioactivity to confirm the presence of Chlorine-39 (T(1/2)=56.2min) formed by the interaction of cosmic-ray slow negative muons, mu(-) with Argon-40 in the lower atmosphere [2].
