The late developmental expression of the MOBP gene suggests that the MOBP proteins act at the late steps of myelin formation, possibly in myelin compaction and in the maintenance of the myelin sheath [1].
It is a novel member of the central nervous system (CNS) myelin-constituting proteins, myelin-associated oligodendrocytic basic protein (MOBP) [2].
Here, we use subcellular fractionation to show that four MOBP mRNAs, like MBP mRNA, are located at sites of myelin sheath assembly, and that three other MOBP mRNAs are located in oligodendrocyte soma [3].
Furthermore, thyroid hormone may modulate specific genes, as demonstrated by permanent down-regulation of MOBP and PLP expression in adulthood [4].
