Cloning and characterization of a gene, pbpF, encoding a new penicillin-binding protein, PBP2B, in Staphylococcus aureus [1].

A previously unrecognized penicillin binding protein (PBP) gene, pbpF, was identified in Staphylococcus aureus [1].
Ceftriaxone resistance was restored by heterologous expression of pbpF from Enterococcus faecium but not by mgt encoding the monofunctional glycosyltransferase of Staphylococcus aureus [2].
Site-directed mutagenesis of pbpF confirmed that the catalytic serine residue of the transpeptidase module was not required for resistance [2].
To identify the glycosyltransferase partner(s) of PBP5, combinations of deletions were introduced in all three class A PBP genes of E. faecalis JH2-2 (ponA, pbpF, and pbpZ) [2].

Analytical, diagnostic and therapeutic context of pbpF

The internal region of pbpF and PBP2B protein were found in all 12 S. aureus strains tested by PCR and immunoblotting [1].
