Disease relevance of BP26

  • By using molecular biology techniques, a gene that encodes a 26-kDa protein (BP26) was isolated from a Brucella abortus S19 genome lambda gt11 library [1].
  • In particular, S. epidermidis (P less than 0.001), streptococci (P less than 0.005), enterococci (P less than 0.05), and members of the family Enterobacteriaceae (P less than 0.001) were detected earlier by the BP26 bottle [2].
  • Growth of Staphylococcus aureus (P < 0.01), viridans group streptococci (P < 0.01), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P < 0.05), and all microorganisms combined (P < 0.05) was detected earlier in BP26 bottles [3].
  • BP26 might be of value as an antigen for serological diagnosis of brucellosis in different mammals [1].
  • The BACTEC high-blood-volume fungal medium (HBV-FM) (Becton Dickinson Diagnostic Instrument Systems, Sparks, Md.) was compared with the Isolator (IS) tube and the BACTEC Plus 26 (BP26) blood culture bottle for the ability to recover fungi from the blood of adult patients suspected of having fungemia [3].

High impact information on BP26

  • BACTEC PLUS high-blood-volume resin media (aerobic BP 26 vial and anaerobic BP 27 vial) were compared with standard BACTEC media (aerobic NR 6A and anaerobic NR 7A vial) [4].
  • After taking into account the difference of blood volume between the two systems, only S. aureus was significantly more detected by the aerobic BP 26 vial [4].
  • In sheep experimentally infected with B. melitensis H38 the antibody response to BP26 was delayed and much weaker than that to O-PS [5].
  • Weak antibody responses to BP26 in some of the latter sheep suggest that a B. melitensis Rev.1 bp26 gene deletion mutant should be constructed to ensure this differentiation [5].
