Accelerated atheroma in the antiphospholipid syndrome.

Increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality due to the pre-mature or accelerated development of atherosclerosis has been reported in patients with systemic autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus. These findings motivated a great deal of research into the role of autoimmunity in atherogenesis. The relationship between atherosclerosis and cholesterol metabolism to atherosclerosis has been well established. However, the participation of newer inflammatory and immunologic mechanisms are emerging as relevant factors for the initiation and progression of atherosclerotic lesions.[1]
