Disease relevance of Indole-3-aldehyde

Different lethal effects by enzyme-generated triplet indole-3-aldehyde in different Escherichia coli strains [1].
A series of indole-3-carboxaldehyde thiosemicarbazones with substituent variations at the 1 and 2 positions were prepared and evaluated for in vitro antiviral activity against vaccinia virus strain IHD and parainfluenza virus type 3, HA-I/CR-8 strain [2].
Indolyl-3-alkane alpha-hydroxylase was isolated from soil isolate organism, Pseudomonas XA, by affinity chromatography on indolyl-agarose, using different indole derivatives (L-tryptophan, N-acetyl-L-tryptophan, indole-3-carboxaldehyde and 3-indole-acrylic acid) [3].

One of them (AO1) had a higher substrate preference for indole-3-aldehyde [4].
The excited species is quenched by oxygen with formation of singlet oxygen, which is responsible for the observed photon emission and can be trapped by suitable agents. tRNA dramatically enhances the emission as a result of energy transfer from triplet indole-3-aldehyde to a 4-thiouridine group in tRNA [5].
Strains of Escherichia coli which lack 4-thiouridine (S4U) exhibit a higher survival rate than their wild-type parents which contain S4U after treatment with enzyme-generated triplet indole-3-aldehyde [1].
Following the previous isolation and identification of the major nitrosation products (Ahmad et al. Fd Chem. Toxic. 1985, 23, 841), two minor products were isolated by HPLC and identified as indolin-3-one oxime and indole-3-aldehyde [6].
