Disease relevance of Med-27

  • Our previous study (Kondo et al, Free Radic. Biol. Med., 27: 401-410, 1999) revealed that human colorectal carcinoma cells are oxidatively stressed based on 8-OHdG determination [1].
  • Excessive generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been suggested as a causal factor in various neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease [Brain Res. 830 (1999) 10-15; Biochem. J. 310 (1995) 83-90; Free Radic. Biol. Med. 27 (1999) 612-616] [2].
  • However, a follow-up of this cohort (O'Berg et al., 1985, J. Occup. Med. 27, 835-840) shows no statistically significant excess of lung cancer mortality or incidence [3].
  • A reduced amount of platelet-aggregating activity was observed with antibody fragments prepared for labeling with 99mTc by pre-exposure to stannous ions, and herein used in biodistribution studies and elsewhere in thrombus imagining studies (J. Nucl. Med. 27: 1315; 1986) [4].

High impact information on Med-27

  • Previous studies from this laboratory have shown actin to be a major protein of human lymphocytes (Stark, R., Liebes, L. F., Nevrla, D., and Silber, R. Biochem. Med., 27: 200-206, 1982) [5].
  • We recently showed that alveolar type II cells take up vitamin E preferentially from high-density lipoprotein (HDL), probably by means of the candidate HDL receptor, scavenger receptor class B type I (SR-BI; Kolleck et al. Free Rad Biol Med 27; 882-890, 1999) [6].
  • The effect on platelets of a new molecule denominated MED 27 (1-methyl-5-(4-methylbenzoyl)pyrrole-2-acetic acid 2-(theophylline-7-yl)ethyl ester, CAS 104333-87-1) was investigated [7].
  • This is consistent with the hypothesis (Williams, K.J., Werth, V.P. and Wolff, J.A. (1984) Perspect. Biol. Med. 27, 417-431) that liposomes enhance reverse cholesterol transport by generating cholesterol-poor HDL particles that can extravasate and promote more sterol efflux from peripheral tissues [8].
