Here, we show that Fgf8 signalling in the somite is required for myod expression and terminal differentiation of a subset of fast muscle cells in the zebrafish lateral somite [1].
However, some mesoderm cells are still able to undergo myogenic differentiation in the anterior trunk of Zoep;ace embryos, revealing a morphological transition at the level of somites 6-8 [2].
On the other hand, myod expression remained unchanged in foxd3 morphants [3].
On the basis of the expression patterns of myf5 and myod, we propose a model to present how Myf5 and Myod are involved in head myogenesis of zebrafish [4].
