High impact information on Lcp3

  • Our results suggest that Lcp1 and Lcp3 loci on the degenerating Y chromosome of D. miranda are silenced by neighboring transposable elements [1].
  • The mutation abolishing the expression of CP3 was found to be a 7.3-kilobase DNA insertion located within the T-A-T-A box region of this gene, at -31 base pairs from the mRNA start site [2].
  • Thus, insertion of a transposable element into the putative promoter region of the CP3 gene is evidently responsible for inactivating CP3 gene expression [2].
  • Sequence analysis indicates that H.M.S. Beagle contains 266-base-pair direct repeats at its termini and is flanked by a duplication of 4 base pairs of target DNA sequence, T-A-T-A, in the CP3 gene insertion [2].
  • Since three of the Lcp alleles on the neo-Y are not expressed and Lcp3 is expressed only at a reduced level, it is suggestive to speculate that the rearrangements might be involved as cis-regulatory elements in the up-regulation of the X2-chromosomal Lcp alleles, in Drosophila an essential process for dosage compensation [3].

Biological context of Lcp3

  • The Beagle element appears to inactivate the LCP-3 gene by inserting into its TATA box, but also may cause the precocious expression of two other LCP genes, LCP-1 and LCP-f2, in the cluster [4].
