Disease relevance of MPFL

  • MATERIALS AND METHODS: Knee MR images obtained within 8 weeks after LPD were evaluated for medial retinacular and medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) disruption, vastus medialis obliquus (VMO) edema and/or elevation, and other derangements [1].
  • CONCLUSION: MRI accurately depicts both the extent and the location of MPFL injury following transient patellar dislocation and can therefore play a significant role in directing surgical management of these patients [2].

High impact information on MPFL

  • They also, in conjunction with known neurotropic properties of MPF, and our unpublished finding of high concentrations of an MPF-like peptide in human basal ganglia, suggest that MPF may have physiological significance in the development and regeneration of the human CNS [3].
  • The most anatomically distinct structure is the MPFL, whose length varies from 45-50 mm, and its width from 10-20 mm at its origin (medial femoral epicondyle) to 20-30 mm at its insertion to the patella [4].
  • The "meshing" of the MPFL fibers to the fibers of the vastus medialis obliquus (VMO) close to its patellar insertion was the most interesting and very important finding [4].
  • This study investigated the results of augmented repair for avulsion-tear type medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) injury performed on a total of five knees with initial acute lateral patellar dislocation [5].
  • This study assessed the clinical and radiological outcome after a follow-up of 4 years after linear MPFL reconstruction using an ipsilateral Semitendinosus tendon autograft [6].

Anatomical context of MPFL

  • Ten fresh cadaver knees were prepared by isolating the patella, leaving only the MPFL as its attachment to the medial femoral condyle [7].
  • The MPFL was either repaired by using a Kessler suture or reconstructed using either bone anchors or one of two tendon grafting techniques [7].
  • The most significant findings were the correlation of free fluid around the medial collateral ligament (MCL) with avulsion of the femoral attachment of the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) and the presence of avulsed fragments of bone from the medial border of the patella [8].
