Disease relevance of manganese

  • CONCLUSION: In HPN patients, sustained inflammation may facilitate hypermanganesemia through 1. cholestatic liver disease and thereby decreased Mn biliary excretion, 2. high nutritional requirements (responsible for increased Mn supply), and/or 3. modified Mn metabolism or body distribution [1].
  • We discussed the possibility that manganese (Mn) caused the signal change, and proposed that the administration of a lower dose of Mn is recommended, even in the case of temporal PN, to prevent possible Mn toxicity toward both the brain and liver [2].
  • Protein undernutrition, alterations of hormones such as IGF-1, testosterone and cortisol, and increased lipid peroxidation-which may be related with deranged metabolism of some elements such as iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se) or copper (Cu)-may contribute to muscle damage in non alcoholic cirrhosis [3].

High impact information on manganese

  • Manganese-54 also showed highly significant accumulation in cardiac muscle with a heart/blood ratio at 4 h superior to comparable values previously reported for Cs-137 and Tl-201 [4].
  • All patients investigated by MRI showed hyperintense basal ganglia on T1-weighted images suggesting brain Mn deposition [1].
  • Calves fed the high iron diet excreted less manganese-54 in their feces over 2 days [5].
  • Effect of a purified or corn-skim milk diet on retention and tissue distribution of manganese-54 in calves [6].
  • When manganese (Mn2+) was substituted for cobalt following EDTA treatment and extensive dialysis of the MetAP-2 protein, these inhibitors were significantly less potent (40-fold increase in IC50) as inhibitors of MetAP-2 [7].

Biological context of manganese

  • Concentrations of fumes, O3, CO, Mn and total-Cr were found to exceed their corresponding occupational exposure limit (OEL) values, while the concentrations of NO and Cr(VI) were below those OEL levels [8].

Gene context of manganese

  • Forskolin potentiates Ca2+-CaM stimulation, while Mn2+ increases the activity by activating the enzyme through CaM [9].

Analytical, diagnostic and therapeutic context of manganese

  • The number of G. salaris increased continuously during the experiments in all control groups, and in all groups exposed to Cu, Fe and Mn [10].
