Fluorescence and absorption spectra of hydrophobic sunscreens, weakly fluorescent octyl methoxycinnamate, moderately fluorescent octyl salicylate and highly fluorescent 2-ethylhexyl-4-(dimethylamino)benzoate (padimate O) adsorbed to dielectric microspheres in aqueous suspension, have been compared with spectra in organic solution [1].
The effect of OS and PO on TAC permeability was no different to that of ethanol [2].
The cell line was used for screening of UV filters, benzophenone-3 (Bp-3), benzophenone-4, 3-benzylidene camphor, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, butyl-methoxy-dibenzoylmethane, homosalate (HMS), octyl-dimethyl-PABA, and octyl-methoxycinnamate [3].
Illumination of human keratinocytes in the presence of the sunscreen ingredient Padimate-O and through an SPF-15 sunscreen reduces direct photodamage to DNA but increases strand breaks [4].
Using a genetic reversion assay that depends on regenerating beta-galactosidase activity in photodamaged plasmids we find that GC base pairs are particularly susceptible to attack by Padimate-O [5].

Biological context of PreSun 15

Possible routes to the formation of the sunscreen contaminant, 2-ethylhexyl 4-N-methyl-N-nitrosoaminobenzoate, have been investigated in a study of the nitrosation chemistry of 2-ethylhexyl 4-N,N-dimethylaminobenzoate (Padimate-O) and related tertiary and secondary amines [6].
