The levels of MMP-13 and IL-1beta in OA cartilage chondrocytes were evaluated by immunohistochemistry [1].
The Fn-f 45-induced increase in MMP-3 and MMP-13 synthesis occurred via an interleukin 1-independent mechanism, since the receptor antagonist of interleukin-1 was unable to block the increased synthesis [2].
Collagen types I and II, aggrecan, and MMP-13 expression was assayed by semiquantitative RT-PCR [3].

This effect was associated with a reduction in the levels of MMP-13 and IL-1beta, which are known to play an important role in the pathophysiology of OA lesions [1].
