Disease relevance of Spina Bifida Occulta

• Two main types of spina bifida were found in the offspring of trypan blue treated dams: open and occult spina bifida [1].
• A posterior fossa dermoid cyst with dermal sinus and Klippel-Feil syndrome are reported in the same patient [2].
• Cutaneous lipoma (26%), hypertrichiosis (20%), dermal sinus (13.4%), midline dimples (7%) were the important cutaneous markers [3].
• Out of 155 cases of spinal dysraphism, 119 had open spina bifida [meningomyelocele (MMC) in 113 (72%), meningocele in 3 (2%) and myelocystocele in 3 (2%)] and 36 had occult spina bifida [split cord malformation (SCM) without overt MMC sac (pure SCM) in 29 (19%) and midline dermal sinus in 7 (4.5%)] [4].

• Histologic analysis confirmed these findings and demonstrated also retarded removal of the notochord, abnormal shapes and sizes of vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs, and the presence of an occult spina bifida in homozygous Del1 mice [5].
• In particular, we show that late-gestation Ph/Ph embryos have occult spina bifida involving the entire spinal column [6].
• Cranial dermal sinus tracts are congenital lesions that virtually always originate from the midline scalp posteriorly at the external occipital protuberance, anteriorly at the nasion or along the nasal dorsum, or in the posterior parietal midline [7].
