Disease relevance of Pigmentation

• To treat dermal pigmentations, such as nevus of Ota and congenital nevus, the combined therapy of a resurfacing laser (CO2) and a selective photothermolytic laser (the Q-Switched Ruby Laser [QSRL]) was tried, and the results were compared with those treated with the QSRL alone [1].
• As drug eruption was suspected, drugs were ceased, and the cutaneous lesions almost disappeared but pigmentations and depigmentations developed in spots in sun-exposed areas in March of 1991 [2].

High impact information on Pigmentation

• Treatment-induced irregular pigmentations may occur after applications of topical agents (e.g. diphenylcyclopropenone), systemic medication (e.g. 5-fluorouracil, chlorpromazine), as a complication of laser resurfacing or as a chronic graft-versus-host reaction [3].
• It included the inability to produce base either from sodium citrate or lactic acid media, growth at 45 degrees C (thermophilicity), and production of very similar pigmentations on Aspergillus flavus and parasiticus agar [4].

• On the basis of a detailed study of the literature we can conclude that the retinal lesions in chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia may vary from benign pigmentations without functional impairment to genuine 'retinitis pigmentosa' with all gradations of rod-cone or cone-rod dystrophy [7].
