Disease relevance of arginine

• To determine whether abnormalities in glucagon secretion might precede the onset of hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus, 32 prediabetic Pima (American) Indians, 27 normal Pima Indians and 34 normal Caucasians received an infusion of arginine monochloride (5 mg/kg/min for 40 minutes) with measurement of glucose, insulin, and glucagon [1].
• Five dosages of 10% L-arginine hydrochloride (0.015, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 g/kg of body weight) were administered to 5 cats [2].

High impact information on arginine

• During arginine monochloride infusion (5 mg./kg./minute for 40 minutes) the diabetic Pimas had glucagon levels significantly higher at 10 minutes and at all sampling points thereafter than the normo-glycemic Pimas [3].
• However, no effect of L-arginine hydrochloride supplementation was found on bone metabolism or on BMD, bone mass, or bone structure of healthy postmenopausal women [4].
• METHODS: Twenty-eight New Zealand White rabbits received either normal rabbit chow, 0.5% cholesterol diet or 0.5% cholesterol diet plus L-arginine hydrochloride (2.25% wt/vol) in the drinking water [5].
• The vasodilatation induced by L-arginine hydrochloride and sodium glutamate was not sustained [6].
• Acute pancreatitis was induced by 250 mg per 100 g body weight of 20% L-arginine hydrochloride in 0.15 mol/L sodium chloride [7].
