Biological context of Naip5

  • These results suggest that sensing of L. pneumophila products by Birc1e/Naip5 in macrophages occurs rapidly following phagocytosis, a process that antagonizes the ability of L. pneumophila to remodel its phagosome into a specialized vacuole with ER characteristics [5].
  • We speculate that Naip5 is a functional mammalian homolog of plant "resistance" proteins that monitor for, and initiate host response to, the presence of secreted bacterial virulence proteins [3].
