Disease relevance of tetradecane

  • During growth on n-tetradecane a novel NADH-dependent carbonyl reductase is induced in the Gram-positive bacterium Rhodococcus erythropolis (Peters, P., Zelinski, T. and Kula, M.R. (1992) Appl. Microbiol. Biotechnol. 38, 334-340) [1].
  • AIMS: Isolation and characterization of a transposon mutant of Pseudomonas aeruginosa affecting the uptake of dibenzothiophene (DBT) in n-tetradecane (n-TD) [2].
  • The recombinant strain MR65, from Mycobacterium sp. NCIMB10403, was able to grow on a minimal medium supplemented with 1.0 mM 4,6-dipropyl DBT in n-tetradecane (50%, v v ) as the sole sulfur source [3].

High impact information on tetradecane

  • Long-range self-assembly of a polyunsaturated linear organosilane at the n-tetradecane/Au(111) interface studied by STM [4].
  • At pH < or = 4.0, DOPS (with no td) adopted the H(II) phase on its own, in agreement with previous results, suggesting a reversal in curvature upon protonation of the serine headgroup [5].
  • The emulsion containing SDS-coated n-tetradecane droplets showed a considerable increase in mean droplet size with time, which was attributed to Ostwald ripening associated with this oils appreciable water-solubility [6].
  • Analysis of chlorinated, sulfochlorinated and sulfonamide derivatives of n-tetradecane by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry [7].
  • An aerobic, heterotrophic, Gram-negative, curved bacterial strain, designated MIL-1T, was isolated by extinction dilution from an n-tetradecane enrichment culture that was established from sea water/sediment samples collected in the harbour of Milazzo, Italy [8].

Analytical, diagnostic and therapeutic context of tetradecane

  • Incubation of confluent cell cultures with non-cytotoxic concentrations of JP-8 or n-tetradecane (C14), a primary constituent of JP-8, for a 1-h exposure period resulted in dose-dependent increases of paracellular flux [12].
  • Time-dependent intermolecular sulphydryl-disulphide interchange involving beta-lactoglobulin adsorbed at the oil-water interface in n-tetradecane-in-water emulsions (10 wt% oil, 0.5 wt% protein, pH 7.0) has been investigated using sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) [13].
  • The toxicological initial screening and quantitation were performed by means of gas chromatography with flame-ionization detection and confirmation was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in total ion chromatogram mode. n-Tetradecane peak was selected to estimate diesel fuel No. 2 in all biological samples [14].
