Disease relevance of Sesamoid Bones

High impact information on Sesamoid Bones

Anatomical context of Sesamoid Bones

  • The anterior aspect of the distal deep flexor tendon articulates with the stiff paratendinous sheath and sesamoid bones and is subjected to compressive and frictional forces in addition to longitudinal tensile forces [8].
  • 76 fractures occurred in the tibia, 26 in the metatarsal bones, 20 in the fibula, 5 in the femoral neck, 4 in the femoral shaft, and 2 in the metacapal bones, lower pubic arch and sesamoid bones of the first MTP-joint [9].
  • The highest bone concentrations of gentamicin were 55+/-30 microg/g in the distal metacarpus, 34+/-27 microg/g in the proximal, 16+/-15 microg/g in the middle, and 16+/-2.2 microg/g in the distal phalanges, and 27+/-17 microg/g in the proximal and 24+/-11 microg/g in the distal sesamoid bones [10].
  • Histologic cross sections through the thumb in cadaveric specimens at the level of the metacarpophalangeal crease showed the radial digital nerve to be 2.19 mm beneath the dermis and 1.15 mm directly anterior to the radial sesamoid bone [11].

Associations of Sesamoid Bones with chemical compounds

  • The synthesis of proteoglycans in articular cartilage of bovine sesamoid bones was increased after application of 5% (v/v) PVP-I without any increase in catabolism revealing possibilities for the use as irrigation solution in the joint [12].
