Whereas mre-11 mutant germ cells are repair-deficient, they retain function of the meiotic G(2) DNA damage checkpoint that triggers germ cell apoptosis in response to ionizing radiation [1].
Correspondingly, defects in Ubc5(let-70) or the DNA damage checkpoint genes atl-1 or mre-11 abolish CeBCD-dependent ubiquitylation in vivo [2].
In contrast, mre-11 and atm-1 are dispensable for ATL-1 recruitment to stalled replication forks [3].
RAD-51 localization requires the recombination genes spo-11 and mre-11 as well as chk-2, which is necessary for homology recognition and presynaptic alignment [4].
The deficiency of dna-2 in combination with RNA interference on mre-11 gene expression synergistically aggravated germ-line development, especially oocyte formation [5].

Biological context of mre-11

These results suggest that C. elegans Dna-2 is involved in a DNA repair pathway paralleling homologous recombination or non-homologous end joining with mre-11 participation [5].
