Disease relevance of Earache

  • The empiric use of amoxicillin for treatment of acute otitis media should be reexamined in our community particularly in those who appear ill, have a high fever or have severe unremitting otalgia [1].
  • Hearing loss (sensorineural, conductive, or mixed), otalgia, otorrhea, and even gross tissue extrusion herald this condition [2].
  • The higher OR values were for the following parameters: sore throat (OR = 3.59; 95% CI 2.04-5.35), nasal secretion (OR = 3.27; 95% CI 2.31-4.62) and earache (OR = 3.11; 95% CI 2.01-4.80) for Andrographis paniculata treatment over placebo, respectively [3].
  • RESULTS: No significant pain-relieving effect was seen in the lidocaine with adrenaline group (p>0.05) and also the other post-operative parameters such as nausea, fever, vomiting, odor, bleeding, otalgia and trismus were not statistically different between the two groups based on chi-square analysis (p>0.05) [4].
  • We present the case of a 47-year-old woman with left otalgia, rotatory vertigo, sensorineural hearing loss and acute facial nerve palsy [5].

High impact information on Earache

  • While pseudoephedrine hydrochloride is effective in decreasing the risk for earache in adults with recurrent air travel-associated ear pain, such use in children has not been studied [6].
  • The incidence of otalgia decreased from 89% (16/18) in the isotonic sodium chloride-treated group to 63% (12/19) in the ropivacaine-treated and 61%(11/18) in the ropivacaine plus clonidine-treated groups (P<.01) [7].
  • The results indicate that the use of a stabilization splint is beneficial with regard to secondary otalgia and active TMD treatment need [8].
  • The efficacy parameters used were fever clearance, symptom clearance and cure rate after 8 days of treatment Our study showed that fever regressed in 19 (95%) of the 20 patients in both groups; otalgia in 19 (95) patients for the Augmentin and 18 (90%) for Rovamycin after 8 days of application of the trial drugs in these parameters [9].
  • Drug induced otalgia due to mesalazine and sulphasalazine [10].

Chemical compound and disease context of Earache

  • The patient was treated for an exacerbation of his disease with courses of mesalazine and sulphasalazine during which time he developed otalgia [10].
  • Whilst aspirin proved slightly more effective in relieving pain and discomfort of swallowing, 'Difflam' Oral Rinse was superior in the relief of earache, in promoting the healing of the tonsil bed and in the duration of necessity of treatment [11].
  • Otalgia and auricular herpes was improved rapidly after the administration of Aciclovir [12].
  • Naproxen had no significant effect on otalgia or hearing loss compared to placebo [13].
  • However, the severity of otalgia and hearing loss was almost identical in the ears with detectable levels of PGE2 and those without [13].
