Disease relevance of minocycline

  • Minocyclin was effective against all strains with the exception of E. coli 0159, 025, 0164 and 063, which were moderately susceptible [1].
  • In an organ culture system using newborn mouse calvaria, the conditioned medium of H-31 cells increased the concentration of calcium in the medium, and this effect was inhibited by minocyclin, indicating that bone resorption occurred in this system [2].
  • We report on a 37-yr-old woman with known antemortem ingestion of minocyclin who died suddenly from a ruptured cerebral aneurysm [3].
  • The authors report a study carried out on 82 patients affected with gonococcal urethritis, in order to investigate the activity of minocyclin in the prevention of postgonococcal urethritis [4].
  • Accordingly, pleurodesis with minocyclin was undertaken, which was fortunately effective for controlling the pleural effusion [5].
  • Our finding that minocycline has a harmful effect on patients with ALS has implications for trials of minocycline in patients with other neurological disorders, and for how potential neuroprotective agents are screened for use in patients with ALS [6].
