Disease relevance of Pasteurellosis, Pneumonic

High impact information on Pasteurellosis, Pneumonic

  • We have determined the 1.35- and 1.45-A structures, respectively, of closed and open iron-loaded forms of Mannheimia haemolytica ferric ion-binding protein A. M. haemolytica is the causative agent in the economically important and fatal disease of cattle termed shipping fever [4].
  • Leukotoxin produced by Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica is an important virulence factor in shipping fever pneumonia in feedlot cattle and is a critical protective antigen [5].
  • To determine the density of mast cells (MCs) and the extent of substance P (SP) immunoreactivity during initiation and progression of pneumonic pasteurellosis (PP), 18 lambs were inoculated intrabronchially with Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica or saline, and lung tissue was collected at 1, 15 and 45 days post-inoculation (n=3, each group) [6].
  • CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: When used to treat pneumonic pasteurellosis in calves, danofloxacin and enrofloxacin can be expected to deliver concentration-dependent bactericidal activity against M. haemolytica, the bacteria most commonly associated with bovine respiratory tract disease [7].
  • Neutrophil-mediated endothelial injury and neutrophil degranulation were, at least in part, mediated by IL8, whereas PAF promoted superoxide release by neutrophils in this in vitro system designed to mimic the in vivo events that occur during the early stages of bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis [8].
