Disease relevance of Leprosy

  • Clofazimine is useful in the treatment of Hansen's disease (leprosy) and some dermatological disorders, and is currently being used in drug regimens for patients with human immunodeficiency viral infections who are also infected with Mycobacterium avium complex [1].
  • Thalidomide, once banned, has returned to the center of controversy with the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) announcement that thalidomide will be placed on the market for the treatment of erythema nodosum leprosum, a severe dermatological complication of Hansen's disease [2].
  • A fatal case of drug-induced multi-organ damage in a patient with Hansen's disease: dapsone syndrome or rifampicin toxicity [3]?
  • Therefore, in aged male patients with Hansen's disease, the follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone and testosterone concentrations should be measured, as well as that of prostate-specific antigen, and a prostate biopsy should be also considered if the prostate-specific antigen concentration is increased, even with hypogonadism [4].
  • The analysis of sera showed 73.3% of pulmonary tuberculosis cases, 16.2% of healthy controls and 44.4% of Hansen's disease positive for tubercular antigen [5].

High impact information on Leprosy

  • For the evaluation of cancer risks associated with immunodeficiencies experienced by patients with Hansen's disease (leprosy) and for the assessment of possible adverse effects of dapsone therapy, a follow-up study was conducted of 1,678 patients admitted to the National Hansen's Disease Center in Carville, La., between 1939 and 1977 [6].
  • Gallium 67 imaging was used in 12 patients with documented Hansen's disease undergoing treatment or not, in an attempt to determine the pattern of the disease [7].
  • Commercially purchased monofilaments from the Hansen's Disease Center (HDC) and a batch produced 'in-house' (RPAH) were calibrated using a Mettler Balance. To assess the effects of varying lengths on buckling force, the monofilaments were tested repeatedly while the length of the filament was reduced stepwise from 4.1 to 3.1 cm [8].
  • Immunohistochemical examination of skin lesions obtained from patients with the lepromatous or the tuberculoid form of Hansen's disease revealed intralesional IL-15 protein in both forms of the disease [9].
  • Two cases of Hansen disease demonstrating a lupus-like inhibitor directed against the activation of coagulation factor X are described [10].
