Disease relevance of L-Mannitol

• When grown in medium containing 10 g/l mannitol and 1 g/l glutamic acid, Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii TA-1 synthesized up to 2.0 g/l of extracellular polysaccharide (EPS), and up to 1.6 g/l of capsular polysaccharide (CPS) [1].
• In anesthetised rabbits with a 2 ml hypertonic mannitol-Ringer hydrothorax in the right space 30 mM/L mannitol were required for an unchanged volume of the hydrothorax after 60 min [2].

High impact information on L-Mannitol

• Glucose concentration in the medium was adjusted to 5 mmol/l, 11 mmol/l, 25 mmol/l or 5 mmol/l/20 mmol/l mannitol to correct for osmolality [3].
• The mitogenic effect of HB-EGF was significantly greater in SMCs cultured in high glucose (25 mmol/L) than in cells cultured in low glucose (5.5 mmol/L) or at high osmolarity (5.5 mmol/L glucose plus 19.5 mmol/L mannitol) [4].
• METHODS: Rat mesangial cells were grown in medium containing 5 mmol/L glucose, 30 mmol/L glucose, or 5 mmol/L glucose plus 25 mmol/L mannitol [5].
• A special osmotic buffer (0.6 mol/L mannitol, 5 mmol/L CaCl(2)) was used to keep the osmotic balance of embryonic protoplasts during the protoplasts derivatization [6].

Biological context of L-Mannitol

• Application of hypertonic Ringer bicarbonate solution (+150 mmol/l mannitol) resulted in cell shrinkage to 84 +/- 2% of the initial cell volume (shrinkage expected for an ideal osmometer = 66%), indicating a significant regulatory volume increase [8].
• Infusion of 0.3 mol/l mannitol into the lateral ventricle of water-replete sheep did not alter renal Na excretion but induced a water diuresis [9].

Anatomical context of L-Mannitol

• METHODS: The PVECs were isolated from rat omentum and were incubated for 4 hours in three different culture media [M199 media (control), conventional dialysis solutions containing 4.25% glucose diluted with an equal volume of M199 media (HGD), and M199 media containing 118 mmol/L mannitol as an osmolar control (mannitol)] [10].
• MATERIALS AND METHODS: The left coronary artery of pigs was perfused with five isotonic solutions: iodixanol 320 mg I/mL with 19 mmol/L NaCl + 0.3 mmol/L CaCl2, Iod 320+Mann (iodixanol 320 mg I/mL + 50 mmol/L mannitol), Mann+Na/Ca (240 mmol/L mannitol with 19 mmol/L NaCl + 0.3 mmol/L CaCl2), Mann (275 mmol/L mannitol) and Ringer [11].
• Replacement of 40 mmol/l NaCl with 80 mmol/l mannitol in bath perfusate does not appreciably affect the cell volume or the potential difference across the basolateral cell membrane [12].
• During the 1-hour occlusion, animals were randomly assigned to 1 of the following treatments: intravenous injection of HUCB (a subtherapeutic dose of 200,000 cells in 10 microL) with blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeabilizer (1.1 mol/L mannitol at 4 degrees C) or vehicle, intravenous vehicle alone, or intravenous mannitol alone [13].

Associations of L-Mannitol with other chemical compounds

• Abscisic acid increased TTC reduction only when added in combination with 0.53 mol/L mannitol [14].
• The fast tension increase to caffeine (first phase) could be restored if after UER-treatment 5 mmol/l mannitol (Fig. 3b), a 20 min treatment with choline chloride (Fig. 4a) or sodium isethionate (Fig. 4b) Ringer's solution of double osmolarity were applied [15].

Analytical, diagnostic and therapeutic context of L-Mannitol

• In whole-cell recordings we found that addition of 50 or 100 mmol/l mannitol depolarized these cells significantly from -78+/-2.0 to -66+/-3.8 mV (n=22) and from -78+/-1 [16].
• A whole gut irrigation with prior oral administration of 1 l mannitol 10% was performed in the third group [17].
