Disease relevance of Lymphoma, Small Lymphocytic

Recently, we found that the G6 CRI also is expressed frequently by neoplastic CD5 (Leu1) B cells from patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or small lymphocytic lymphoma [1].
Skp2 expression in small lymphocytic lymphomas (SLLs) and follicular lymphomas (FCLs) was low (mean percentage of positive tumor cells, less than 20%) and was inversely correlated (r = -0.67; P <.0001) with p27(Kip1) and positively correlated with the PI (r = 0.82; P <.005) [2].
While small lymphocytic lymphomas regularly expressed vimentin, the neoplastic population of mixed, small and large, and large cell lymphomas often contained various proportions of vimentin-negative tumor cells or failed to express it at all [3].
Our results show that purified monoclonal NHL B cells of the small cell (well-differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma, nodular poorly differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma, etc) type, that were positive for the human malignancy-associated nucleolar antigen could be stimulated by human B cell growth factor (BCGF) to proliferate in vitro [4].
CLL/small lymphocytic lymphoma, (nodal) mantle cell lymphoma, follicular center cell lymphoma, Burkitt's lymphoma, and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma were virtually always alpha 4 beta 7 negative, as was the case when localized in the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue [5].

High impact information on Lymphoma, Small Lymphocytic

Using the polymerase chain reaction, we find that this VH gene is rearranged, and presumably expressed, in the genomic DNA of all examined cases of G6-reactive CLL or small lymphocytic lymphoma [1].
Here, BMI-1 and EZH2 expression patterns are analyzed in a variety of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas (B-NHLs), including small lymphocytic lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, large B-cell lymphoma, mantle-cell lymphoma, and Burkitt lymphoma [6].

CD11a(LFA-1) was more expressed in NHL and IDL than in B-CLL (P = .047), although it was demonstrable in 74.2% of cases; CD11c was more expressed in B-CLL (P less than .0001), and its expression was preserved in almost all of the cases of small lymphocytic lymphoma [9].

Fludarabine is a highly effective chemotherapeutic agent for chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma and is also active in other B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders [10].
Among direct interviews the risk of small lymphocytic lymphoma increased with diazinon use (OR = 2.8), after adjustment for other pesticide exposures [11].
Fludarabine, the most widely used purine analog, exhibits a particularly high level of activity against small lymphocytic lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) [12].
We report a patient treated for small lymphocytic lymphoma/leukemia with cerebral venous and sinus thrombosis (CVST) after lumbar puncture with intrathecal administration of methotrexate (MTX) [13].

Detection of cyclin D1 may be used as a highly specific marker of MCL because it is expressed in virtually all of these tumors, but in only a few reported cases of aggressive variants of chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL) and a small percentage of cases of multiple myeloma [20].
The small lymphocytic lymphomas express the low-affinity IL-2 receptor and CD5, both of which are induced on normal B cells following mitogen stimulation [21].
In B-cell NHL, ZAP-70 was positive in five of six (83%) precursor B-lymphoblastic lymphoma, 11 of 37 (30%) chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL), five of 39 (13%) mantle cell lymphoma, one of 12 (8%) Burkitt lymphoma, and one of 12 (8%) nodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma [22].
A subset of B cell neoplasms expressing MNDA included hairy cell leukemia, parafollicular (monocytoid) B cell lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma, and small lymphocytic lymphoma [23].
Helpful immunohistochemical markers to distinguish MCL from similar small lymphocytic lymphomas were CD5+, CD10-, CD23- and Alkaline Phosphatase+ [24].
