Disease relevance of Acupuncture Points

  • Intrathecal (i.t.) administration of N/OFQ (15 nmol) or EA at acupoints GB30 and GB34 could significantly attenuate hyperalgesia which was induced by subcutaneously injecting complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) into one hindpaw of rats, manifesting as decreased paw withdrawal latency (PWL) to the noxious thermal stimulus [1].
  • MS for 7 days beginning on postnatal day 14 induced a significant decrease in body weight and locomotion, while acupuncture treatment at acupoint Shenmen (HT7) resulted in a significant increase in both [2].
  • CONCLUSION: Stimulation of the P6 acupoint with capsicum plaster is an effective method for prevention of PONV after middle ear surgery and its efficacy is comparable to ondansetron for the first six hours after surgery [3].
  • Moreover, electroacupuncture (EA) at special abdominal acupoints has been shown to induce a short-term hypoglycemia effect in streptozotocin diabetic rats [4].

High impact information on Acupuncture Points

  • The observed high-frequency acupoint stimulation effects of Theta EEG were only present during, but not after, simulation [5].
  • In addition to an increase in plasma beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity, the plasma glucose lowering action of electroacupuncture stimulation at Zhongwan acupoint was abolished by naloxone in a sufficient dose to block opioid receptors [6].
  • RESULTS: Incidence of nausea in the PACU was significantly lower in the acupoint group as compared with the sham point group (32% vs. 56%, P = 0.029) and P6 sham group (32% vs. 64%, P = 0.002) but not as compared with the droperidol group (32% vs. 46%, P = ns) [7].
  • Finally, significantly fewer subjects in the acupoint group required intravenous ondansetron as an initial rescue therapy (P = 0.024) [7].
  • In vivo treatment with neutralizing monoclonal antibody against mouse IFN-gamma completely abrogated the increase in splenic NK cell activity induced by ST36 acupoint stimulation [8].

Anatomical context of Acupuncture Points

Associations of Acupuncture Points with chemical compounds

  • Therefore, we suggest that serotonin also involved in the hypoglycemic action of 2 Hz EA at both zusanli acupoints of normal rats [11].
  • These results provided strong evidence that stimulation of the specific acupoint HT7 helps to normalize the release of dopamine in the mesolimbic system following chronic ethanol treatment [12].
  • There was no sharp hypoglycemic response to 2 Hz EA at zusanli acupoint of STZ-induced diabetic rats [11].
  • The goal of the present study was to determine whether bee venom (BV) injection into the Zhongwan acupoint (CV12), compared to injection into a non-acupoint, produced antinociception in an acetic acid-induced visceral pain model [13].
  • On Control day, electrodes were positioned near the acupoints, but needles were not inserted [14].

Gene context of Acupuncture Points

  • BV acupoint stimulation significantly increased Fos-TH double-labeled neurons in the Arc, LC and DR [15].
  • Fos-DBH positive neurons were also increased by BV acupoint stimulation in the LC and A5 [15].
  • The TNF-alpha, IL-1beta and IL-6 positive cells in the immunohistological sections of subchondral bone region of the joint significantly decreased in HP-treated (ST36 acupoint) arthritic group as compared with those in non-treated or HP-treated (non-acupoint) ones, which was coincident with the behavioral studies [16].
  • COX-2 expression in these two locations were intensified by pregnancy, but reduced by acupuncture at the Sp-6 acupoint [17].
  • The activity of the Theta power significantly decreased (P = 0.02), compared with control during HF but not LF stimulation at acupoint stimulation, however, there was no study effect at the mock point [5].
