Disease relevance of Diverticulitis

• Immunohistochemistry confirmed the presence of gp96 protein in IMACs in normal mucosa as well as in mucosa from patients with ulcerative colitis and diverticulitis [1].
• A very high expression of NGAL was seen in colonic epithelium in areas of inflammation, both in non-malignant epithelium (diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and appendicitis) as well as in premalignant and malignant neoplastic lesions of the colon [2].

• For uncomplicated diverticulitis the standard therapy is liquid diet and oral antimicrobials, usually ciprofloxacin and metronidazole [11].
• METHODS: A total of 7159 patients (2478 M, 4681 F) discharged with a diagnosis of diverticulosis or diverticulitis in 1965-83 in the Uppsala Health Care Region were followed-up with the Swedish Cancer Registry [12].
• Procainamide and diltiazem were begun for the atrial fibrillation and ciprofloxacin and metronidazole for suspected diverticulitis [13].
