High impact information on Rheumatic Diseases

  • Our structural observations, supported by mutation studies of both La and RNA components, illustrate the principles behind RNA sequestration by a rheumatic disease autoantigen, whereby the UUU(OH) 3' ends of nascent RNA transcripts are protected during downstream processing and maturation events [8].
  • Autoantibodies from patients with systemic rheumatic diseases were used to map antigenic sites on the 68-kD autoantigen (p68) associated with (U1)RNA-containing small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) particles [9].
  • Furthermore, the sera from a subgroup of patients with other rheumatic diseases and a surprisingly high percentage of asymptomatic relatives of SLE patients exhibited a similar effect [10].
  • The rheumatic disease autoantigen, Ro/SSA, was immunogenic to a rabbit host [11].
  • Here we show that DNA-containing immune complexes (ICs) within lupus serum (SLE-ICs), but not protein-containing ICs from other autoimmune rheumatic diseases, stimulates plasmacytoid DCs (PDCs) to produce cytokines and chemokines via a cooperative interaction between Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) and FcgammaRIIa (CD32) [12].
