Anatomical context of Acute-Phase Reaction

  • Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is a product of mononuclear phagocytes that mediates changes characteristic of the response to inflammation or tissue injury (the acute-phase response) [15].
  • The circulating concentration of hCRP, which is secreted by hepatocytes, is induced up to 1,000-fold during an acute-phase reaction [25].
  • The Hp gene is induced in Hep3B cells by treatment with supernatant from LPS-stimulated monocytes (SMS), in a manner mimicking the acute phase reaction [26].
  • In addition, IL-18 expression in the sublining correlated with macrophage infiltration (r = 0.64, P < 0.0007) and microscopic inflammation scores (r = 0.78, P < 0.0001), and with the acute-phase reaction as measured by the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (r = 0.61, P < 0.0004) [27].
  • In this study, we show that many of the acute phase plasma proteins are expressed in human intestinal epithelial cell lines Caco2 and T84 and that their expression is induced or regulated by cytokines IL-6, IL-1, interferon, and tumor necrosis factor in a manner characteristic of the acute phase response [28].
