Disease relevance of Ostertagia

High impact information on Ostertagia

  • Vaccination with an Ostertagia ostertagi polyprotein allergen protects calves against homologous challenge infection [5].
  • Effects of Ostertagia ostertagi on gastrin gene expression and gastrin-related responses in the calf [6].
  • Full-length or partial coding sequences of 4 different zinc-metalloprotease cDNAs of Ostertagia (met-1, -2, -3 and -4) were amplified using gene-specific primers using the 3'- and 5'-Rapid Amplification of cDNA Ends (RACE) technique [7].
  • An aspartyl protease inhibitor of Ostertagia ostertagi: molecular cloning, analysis of stage and tissue specific expression and vaccine trial [8].
  • Intramuscular immunization of calves with an excretory-secretory antigen fraction enriched for cysteine proteinase activity (ES-thiol) and QuilA as adjuvant induces a protective immune response against the abomasal nematode Ostertagia ostertagi [9].

Chemical compound and disease context of Ostertagia

Biological context of Ostertagia

Anatomical context of Ostertagia

  • The nematode species Spiculopteragia spiculoptera, Spiculopteragia asymmetrica and Ostertagia leptospicularis were recovered from the abomasum of wild red deer, Cervus elaphus, in the forest area of the semi-arid Pampeana Region of La Pampa (Argentina) for the first time [14].
  • Carbachol and secretions from Ostertagia species parasites significantly (P less than 0.001) stimulated isolated preparations of dispersed gastric glands from bovine and ovine abomasal mucosa to secrete pepsinogen [15].
  • Serum pepsinogen concentrations rose more rapidly and to higher levels in adult sheep infected with Ostertagia circumcincta and treated orally with the mast cell stabilising agent sodium cromoglycate than they did in adult sheep infected with the parasite which remained untreated [16].
  • The circulating fructosamine level was investigated in the lamb as an indicator of protein-losing gastroenteropathy associated with two parasites at different sites, Ostertagia circumcincta (abomasum) and Nematodirus spathiger (small intestine) [17].

Associations of Ostertagia with chemical compounds

Gene context of Ostertagia

  • The 31,000 mol. wt glycoprotein (GP31) antigen of infective third-stage (L3) Ostertagia circumcincta larvae was shown, by surface labelling experiments and immunofluorescent antibody staining of whole larvae and larval sections, to be distributed internally [22].
  • A pepstatin A-agarose column was used in an attempt to purify a previously described antibody-degrading aspartyl proteinase from excretory-secretory material from the L4 and the adult stages of the bovine abomasal nematode Ostertagia ostertagi [23].
  • Protein disulphide isomerase of Ostertagia ostertagi: an excretory-secretory product of L4 and adult worms [23]?
  • Ostertagia circumcincta: isolation of a partial cDNA encoding an unusual member of the mitochondrial processing peptidase subfamily of M16 metallopeptidases [24].
  • Isolation, characterization and immunolocalization of a globin-like antigen from Ostertagia ostertagi adults [25].

Analytical, diagnostic and therapeutic context of Ostertagia

  • PROCEDURE: 2 dose titration studies-0, 125, 250, and 500 micrograms of eprinomectin/kg of body weight-Louisiana and Georgia- and 2 dose confirmation studies of selected therapeutic dosage (500 micrograms/kg) in Scotland and France. Monitor calves were used to determine inhibition percentage of Ostertagia IL4 [26].
  • Plasma concentrations of febantel and its major metabolites fenbendazole, oxfendazole and oxfendazole sulphone were determined after oral administration of 7.5 mg/kg febantel in lambs before and 28 days after infection with 50,000 L3 larvae of Ostertagia circumcincta or Trichostrongylus colubriformis [27].
  • Calves infected by surgical transplantation of adult Ostertagia ostertagi had raised levels of plasma pepsinogen and those in which the largest number of worms established also had elevated plasma gastrin concentrations [28].
